INAUGURATION OF LAYEUN CENTER

The 26th of July 008 was a day awaited by the community of Layeun village; It was the opening ceremony of Layeun Center. Most of the people left their activities to attend the ceremony. The children were also involved as Master of the Ceremony (MC), consumption section, security section, cleaning up and also performing dances who were supervised by the animator of Layeun’s center. Beside it the chiefs of Layeun community were also present and supported the activity. The women also got involved on it by cooked “Ketan” and did “Peusijuk” that was held by imam of Layeun mosque.

According to the tradition of Aceh, before entering a building, we have to bless the building first and then we can use it for our activities. And as for all ADISTA’s centre, if we want to establish/use a building we never forget to follow the tradition. Now the center of ADISTA in Layen runs its activities that are learning through playing.

The children were very happy because the centre they knew from Siron camp of barracks has been transferred to their new village (the persons were first displaced in the camp after the Tsunami and went back to their original village once reconstructed, beginning of 2008). For most of the children in Layeun, ADISTA centre was not new because they had been living in Siron and already knew ADISTA’s centre but they were missing it and were happy to have it in their own village.

For the people of Layeun Village, children without ADISTA’s centre were like children without their mother. That was the improvised speech they said during the inauguration; in the beginning of the centre there were many children who came every day.

The hope of Layeun village is that ADISTA centre would always exist and run its activities because it is very useful for the community in supporting the creativity of their children.

INAGURASI CENTER LAYEUN

LONG WAY TO MON CENTRE

Children playing soccer when rain falls near Mon centre

 LONG WAY TO MON CENTRE

Our center location is rather far from central city of Banda Aceh; it is located precisely at Mesjid Raya sub district, Greater Aceh District. Adista calls us Mon Center due to the location of the center at Meunasah Mon. Our center location is close to a river and near the jungle; it is good, isn’t it?

Sometimes after playing in the center, we go to swim in the river or look for birds. Hey! We enjoy it so much that it makes us forgot to return home. When we come to the center, the activity we like best is making kites or playing soccer especially when the rain falls. Usually the land is getting muddy and it makes us becoming more passionate.

Nowadays, there is something that is disturbing us; due their situation and because they feel abandoned, some people show bad behaviors which are socially against the norms and Acehnese custom. We are really afraid of being influenced by such behaviors. Luckily, our animators always try to protect us from those negative examples; the animators encourage us to come and play in the center so that we can stay away and avoid these negative behaviors’ influences.

In the afternoon, we always go to a small mosque that is located near the center; there we read Koran, and if the center is still opened we will go back to play there after.

MY DEAREST AND UNFORTUNATE CHILD

Leli Yana accompany a child who read Koran during a birthday celebration in Bakoi center

MY DEAREST AND UNFORTUNATE CHILD

My name is Leli Yana. I am one of those who have been beaten by the tsunami and together with my husband I have lived at Bakoy camps along with other tsunami victims. Ever since post tsunami period my activity is working as the responsible of Bakoy Center for ADISTA Foundation. The center is called Rumah Aceh by the community; it is a facility where children can play and learn. I have 3 years working experience with children and their families now.

One of my most impressive experiences was with a three-years-old girl. I know her since she was one year old and I already worked at Rumoh Aceh (Adista Center). At first she attracted my attention due to her habits for beating other children who visit Bakoy center. It is unusual for a child of her age to beat others systematically. Therefore I began to pay more attention to her.

The child’s neighbors in the barracks informed me on her background. They said that she is a neglected child. Her mother had many personal problems and she is always beating the child to release her indulges and anger. The mother herself said to me once that I could take the child if I wanted, because she doesn’ like the child and could not bear her behaviour.

Whenever the child was being reprimanded by her parent she was hurriedly come to me while crying, showing me her body full of scars due to being pinched between forefinger and thumb, stroked or snarled. I always tried to entertain her, embrace and invite her to play.

I know that every child deserves care and affection from his/her parent, and therefore, I decided to try to give advises to her mother. I said the mother that she ought to threat her daughter with love and affection and she needs to be patient. I said also that “Kids are entrusted belongings from God, we should guard and ought to give guidance and affection to them.’’ It occurred also after that discussion, that I would give concrete example to the mother on how to treat the child when she is misbehaving.

After that visit to the mother, she appeared calmer and promised me that she will not beat her daughter anymore and ever since she has started to treat her nicely.

Now, the child and her parents have moved from barrack to a new permanent house. I hope the child is loved by her mother and father, and I know the child is always protected by God.

ANAKKU SAYANG, ANAKKU MALANG

A TOT from Enfants Refugies du Monde.

A Training of Trainer from Enfants Refugies du Monde

Training of Trainers (TOT), was held by ERM (Enfants Refugies du Monde), in cooperation with Adista foundation carried out for 4 (four days), which attended by participants of several NGOs, and local institutions and Adista animators themselves. This training was about “Child and Play at”.

At the beginning participant still confused and underestimated, though later on they were beginning to understand and realized on what and how is playing. It is true, they were all confused due to why all of Adista program through playing. They have not know yet, how important is playing for children, where in that playing contains the process on a children development. So before they know how child was, they have to experience process of becoming children. It was could be imagine how sharp and funny they were when they have had experienced a little children role. There has been no one complaint sleepy or tired. Above all, there has been a coquettish trainer which has made relax all of training participants.
